Alien

OK, I have to ask it:

Is there life on other planets?

In all seriousness. :)

Where did that come from?

Well of course there is! We're both living proof of that!

But in all seriousness. I've had many different thoughts on that subject. If there is life on another planet, it's not human life, I'm very sure on that point. I really don't know what to think. I'm sure if God wanted to, he could've created life on another planet. They'd have their own totally different set of physics laws and such. In many ways, I don't like to think of there being life anywhere else but here, but then at the same time, it feels weird to think of all those planets out there, and ours is the only one with life on it.

I also think it's very possible that God has created other planets with other living creatures. Why ever not? He certainly has the ability to run more than one world at once. Awesome!

Well, I sort of think not...? But I am a bit agnostic on that point.
I can think of two or three ways this question gets handled in science fiction. First, there are the EVIL aliens that are trying to eradicate humanity. That seems sort of silly, and not worth worrying about, because God has a plan for us, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve total annihilation by aliens. Then there is the postmodern treatment, where the aliens have their own culture and beliefs, and it turns out we're kind of unimportant (like growing up in a little rural town, and suddenly discovering that there is a whole world full of people). And I don't agree with that, because we're created in God's image, and that makes us important and special. But I DO like Lewis' science fiction, because it suggests that there is a great deal more than meets the blinking eye. The story of the Bible is huge and has (literally) cosmic implications...

I think C.S. Lewis believed (or at least was open to the idea) that there was life on other planets and that was why he was against space travel (outside his books :) Since the rest of the universe is (most likely) untouched by the fall, man would simply taint it by exploring it. (like in Perelandra...which has BUBBLE TREES!!!)
Hmmm...
There's this interesting passage in Colossians, Colossians 1:19: "For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."
Which goes along with what you said, Beth, that the Incarnation has cosmic implications...what in heaven needs to be reconciled?
